Support the recovery of Glossy Black-Cockatoos by joining the Great Glossy Count

The Glossy Black-Cockatoo was recently listed as ‘Vulnerable’ under Australian legislation and is at risk of further population decline. We are so lucky in the Wollondilly region to have habitat that can still support this special species.

Glossies feed almost exclusively by taking the seeds from the cones of she-oak trees (Allocasuarina and Casuarina). These trees must be protected to maintain a food source for populations of Glossies, thereby reducing the impacts of bushfires and other threats. Data about Glossies and their feeding habitats are vital for planning bushfire recovery and conservation action. Citizens who join the Great Glossy Count collect data to identify Glossy feeding habitats, so it can be protected and restored.

Birdlife has identified the Wollondilly as a priority area for a survey site and we are joining forces with the community to launch a Glossy Search Party.

This is an opportunity to unite the community and show our passion for wildlife and it's important to protect it. Anyone can be part of this event.

Glossy Search Party

Saturday 9 September, you can join fellow bird-lovers in a search party to help find Wollondilly’s Glossy Black Cockatoo population.

At 6:30 am, we will meet at the Thirlmere Lakes Werri Berri Picnic Area to complete a safety briefing and ensure all groups are okay with their search area. The teams will split up and the search will begin.

All levels of fitness are welcome to attend. Counting time can be spent sitting in one spot near food trees or it can be walking the tracks of the beautiful bushland. You set the pace and any extra eyes are so valuable.

After a morning search, we will meet back at Thirlmere Lakes Werri Berri Picnic Area by 9:30 a.m, to hopefully share some exciting news and compare any data.

Get the kids out of the house and involved in this exciting search, while embedding values of the natural world in our region.
