Support the recovery of Glossy Black-Cockatoos by joining the Great Glossy Count

The Glossy Black-Cockatoo was recently listed as ‘Vulnerable’ under Australian legislation and is at risk of further population decline. We are so lucky in the Wollondilly region to have habitat that can still support this special species.

Glossies feed almost exclusively by taking the seeds from the cones of she-oak trees (Allocasuarina and Casuarina). These trees must be protected to maintain a food source for populations of Glossies, thereby reducing the impacts of bushfires and other threats. Data about Glossies and their feeding habitats are vital for planning bushfire recovery and conservation action. Citizens who join the Great Glossy Count collect data to identify Glossy feeding habitats, so it can be protected and restored.

Birdlife has identified the Wollondilly as a priority area for a survey site and we are joining forces with the community to launch a Glossy Search Party.

Search Party Interactive Session

Wednesday 6th Sept 6:30-7:30pm Wollondilly Library in Picton

We’re calling on the community to learn about the Glossy Black Cockatoo that calls Wollondilly home.

Feathered Friends is hosting a free interactive session where we’ll cover how to identify Glossies, evidence of their presence and how to identify their feed trees. Attendees will learn or refresh their knowledge of these special birds in preparation for the Search Party event on Saturday. You will have the opportunity to meet the sanctuary's Black Cockatoos.

On the night we will identify survey locations and allocate groups to each area. Groups will be made up on the night and areas can be allocated based on activity levels and areas of personal interest. Communication channels will be established and plans for the day set.

We can’t wait!
